The Tokyo Olympics will continue with or without COVID-19

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, originally scheduled for this summer, have been postponed in March in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2021 launch date has since been announced, and officials say the games will continue whether or not COVID is present.

“They will be held with or without Covid. The Games will start on July 23 next year,” said John Coates, vice-chair of the IOC Coordination Committee.

“The games were the theme, the games of reconstruction after the devastation caused by the tsunami,” Coates said, referring to the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011. “Now these games that have invaded Covid, will be the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Japanese Games Minister Seiko Hashimoto said the events would take place “at any cost”.

It would be interesting to see Japan attempt the Olympics in the midst of the pandemic, given that most “Japan’s borders are currently largely closed to foreign visitors,” according to the BBC.
