About 405,000 people have signed up to volunteer with the NHS for 24 hours under contract to help weaken the coronavirus crisis, Prime Minister Boris Johnson reported.

Speaking in his daily press conference, he said they will be “absolutely crucial” in the fight against the virus.

Assistants are needed to deliver food and medicines to call patients for appointments and in isolation.

The scheme is one of the numbers aimed at alleviating pressure on the NHS.

Mr Johnson said he would like to offer “special thanks” to all those who now support the NHS.
