Wellington – For more than 100 years, a banner announcing early business activity has been hidden in Wellington’s bedrock. Today, through the magic of modern technology, people in other countries have been watching the restoration of the banner on YouTube.

The ‘Ghost Sign’ was proclaimed – 15 feet high, 50 feet long, 36 feet above ground – in the now vacant building located at 120 S. In about 1915, the Masonic Lodge was constructed next to the building, so close that it obscured the sign from view . The 2018 earthquake demolished the old Masonic building and the dry goods store sign was seen again. It was faded but still visible.

“There was no air between the buildings,” said Colette Cukor, wife of David Carr, Angel’s grandson. “The sign was not exposed to the elements.”

When Laura Lombardi of Wellington purchased the building, Cocor and Carr spoke to her about restoring the sign. They talked to Carr’s father, Frances Carr, Engel’s grandson, about the idea, but he passed away in 2019, before he could see the project take off.

Garrison Hullinger, from Portland, Oregon, is the lead designer who restored the sign.

“We wanted to preserve the complementarity of nostalgia by repeating the original colors as closely as possible,” Hollinger said in a statement. “These signs were painted with house paint, and since color images were not available, we searched through 19th century paint samples and compared them to the remaining wall pigments to obtain a color match.

Lombardi said one of Lawrence’s companies, Prosoco, was applying a special acrylic paint to the paint “so that it would last another hundred years”. The sign will take about two weeks to recover.
