Cricket: Stokes prepares for IPL despite likely coronavirus shutdown
LONDON: English versatile Ben Stokes says he is preparing to play in the Indian Premier League, although he knows that the tournament is unlikely to take place.
Stokes signed to play for the Rajasthan Royals and is one of 13 English players to appear in the IPL.
But the Twenty20 tournament has already been delayed until April 15 in response to the pandemic and India has entered a three-week lockout in an effort to close the gap on Wednesday.
“At the moment, my next competitive cricket will be in the IPL,” Stokes told the BBC Wednesday, March 25.
“It hasn’t changed yet, so I have to think I’ll be playing on April 20.”
Last week, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced that the English county season would not start until at least the end of May, while England’s tour of Sri Lanka has also been postponed due to the virus.
As the IPL leaders have not yet canceled or delayed their event, Stokes must continue to keep fit to play in the unlikely event that he is asked to travel to India.
“I have to understand what I play even if I think I probably am not,” he added.
“I have to flourish and physically put myself in a position that, if it happens, I’m ready to go.
“I can’t take three weeks off and expect the body to be ready for April 20 because it doesn’t work like that. It could happen and if it does, I don’t want to be behind.”

Stokes said the English players were initially shocked when the two-test tour to Sri Lanka was canceled.
But the 28-year-old is well aware that it was the right thing to do in the circumstances.
“Everyone was electrocuted for half an hour in the locker room. It was such a strange feeling because we had been there for 10-12 days. We were preparing for the first test and then we were going home”, said Stokes. .
