UMaine students stop their studies in Italy and return home after an epidemic of coronavirus
The spread of the coronavirus has led to the cancellation or reduction of international study programs, including the programs of Maine schools and colleges.
The COVID-19 virus was first reported in Wuhan, China, and has spread rapidly in China and now in Europe, with more than 88,000 confirmed cases worldwide and at least 3,000 deaths. There have been 74 cases in the United States, but none yet in Maine.
With more than 900 cases in northern Italy, 14 students from the University of Maine who were studying in Italy are sent home.
"The University of Maine has 14 students in Italy studying abroad as part of three university-affiliated programs," said Dan Demeritt, spokesperson for the system. ; University of Maine. "These study abroad programs in Italy decided to close and evacuate students before March 10 when the State Department published a level 3 notice for that country 29 February. These study abroad programs are now exploring online courses so that students can top up their credits. "
The University of Maine system currently has 109 students and professors who study or work to some extent outside the United States, but none in China.
The system now prohibits all university travel to China, South Korea, Italy and Iran, in accordance with federal recommendations. With zero cases in Maine and still a minimal number of cases in the United States, the virus has yet to cause disturbances on the campuses of the University of Maine system.
