Representative Grace Meng felt so helpless after hearing the nurse’s call for help

Earlier on Friday, Meng recounted the phone call on Twitter, describing a disastrous scene at the hospital.

“My hands are shaking, I can’t type. A nurse from my hospital in Elmhurst whom I don’t know just called me crying”, Meng tweeted. “She said they needed vents but more needed doctors and also doctors trained in intensive care. She told me that they cried every day because they know they are going to die. They are begging. Please”

Elmhurst was severely affected by the virus, and medical professionals told CNN that they were melting and panicking.

Meng told Blitzer that she and a New York Democrat colleague, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, had recently sent President Donald Trump a letter imploring him to give priority to the management of personal protective equipment and ventilators in the hospital.

“People have been pleading for weeks, weeks since we knew … what was going on in New York. Our governor was begging; we asked the president to do what he finally did today, to invoke not – in words but with actions – the Defense Production Act, “added Meng, referring to Trump’s decision to require General Motors to produce more ventilators to deal with the increase in hospitalizations for coronavirus .

“Elmhurst is the epicenter of what’s going on here in New York, and New York is the epicenter of the crisis across the country,” said Meng. “It is a warning to the rest of the country if we are not doing it right.”

Meng is not alone in asking Trump directly for federal aid to the hospital.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called the city’s hardest hit hospital on Friday and said he asked Trump, who grew up in Queens, to keep Elmhurst in mind when he spoke to the president that day about how the city needed more medical staff as quickly as possible.

In the hospital, 45 ambulatory staff have been moved to work on urgent cases of Covid-19, said de Blasio. The New York health and hospital system has sent 65 more clinicians to Elmhurst – including registered nurses, nurse practitioners, medical assistants and doctors – and 105 more nurses will be dispatched on Saturday to help fight Covid-19 , he added.
