Coronavirus: Covid-19 NI’s second most common cause of death

The numbers indicate that Covid-19 was the cause of death for most of the death certificates mentioned.
According to official records, Covid-19 was the second leading cause of death in Northern Ireland when lockdown was fully effective.
In Northern Ireland, a total of 4,684 people died between April 1st and June 30th.
Of these deaths, 732 were due to Covid-19. That is almost 16% of all deaths at that time.
By comparison, there were 1,177 (25%) cancer deaths, while heart disease caused 410 deaths (9%).
This figure is included in the latest quarterly report on birth, death and marriage registrations by the Government Statistics Agency of the Northern Ireland Bureau of Statistics (Nisra).
Extra death
Nisra produces these reports four times a year. This allows you to compare the causes and rates of death with the previous year.
Individual figures are published regularly by the Ministry of Health, but these are primarily related to hospital deaths.
This latest report focuses on the second quarter of 2020 (Q2)-April 1st to June 30th.
It is consistent with the lockdown period, which is useful when trying to gain better insights into the effects of the Northern Ireland pandemic.

Nearly 1,000 more deaths than expected between April and June
The consistency of the quarterly report means that it is easy to get a five-year average of deaths for a particular quarter.
The average death toll from April to June over the five years from 2015 to 2019 is 3,736.
Therefore, it is reasonable to expect this number of deaths around the same time in 2020.
However, the latest figures show that 4,684 people died between April and June.
Most of these additional deaths were due to Covid-19.
Nisra figures also show that the majority of people who listed Covid-19 on their death certificate died from the virus itself rather than from other medical conditions.
Statistical agencies have issued weekly updates on Covid’s deaths since the end of March. With these updates, Nisra will look at what doctors will put on their death certificates.
If Covid-19 is mentioned, it will be recorded.
This is an effective way to measure Covid’s death, and while it is always possible for a person to die from Covid, the virus did not actually cause the death.
This latest report is different-it focuses on the cause of death.
Comparing the two counting methods, we can see that 91% of those who listed Covid-19 on their death certificate actually died from the virus itself.
Numbers elsewhere
Statistical agencies in England, Scotland and Wales also usually link these quarterly bulletins to births, marriages and deaths.
However, “The National Bureau of Statistics is not currently producing a quarterly report because ONS is focused on weekly and monthly bulletins due to continuous monitoring of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Scottish National Records recently published a report from April to June. Twenty percent of Scotland’s deaths indicate that Covid-19 was the cause in these three months.
The Central Statistics Office of the Republic of Ireland has not yet published a report for April-June.
