Expanding EEE in Michigan
National health officials announced Thursday that eastern equine encephalitis, a rare and potentially deadly mosquito-borne virus, is widespread in Michigan.
Six more horses have been confirmed to be infected with the virus, which was spread by infected mosquito bites, infecting a total of 28 horses and one suspect in 11 counties.
State health officials on Tuesday for adults in Barry County This is the first human case suspected Triple E this year. Lab testing is underway to confirm the case and will be completed later this week.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Livingston County is currently experiencing triple E cases of horses and will be included in an aerial mosquito control program scheduled to continue Thursday night.
Other high-risk counties infected with horses are Barry, Claire, Ionia, Isabella, Jackson, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm, New Weigo and Auckland.
“Additional cases of EEE in these horses underscore the importance of providing aerial treatment in the affected counties,” said Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS Chief Health Officer and Health Secretary. The doctor said. “There is a continuing threat to Michigan’s health and safety as we know that mosquitoes carry this potentially deadly disease in these areas. Last year, 10 families were devastated by the disease. We are trying to prevent others from getting infected. “
What is EEE?
Eastern equine encephalitis is one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne viruses in the United States. It kills 33% of the people who get sick from it. And it leaves many survivors with physical and mental disabilities.
Mosquitoes are carriers of EEE and can be transmitted to humans and animals after biting infected birds.
As of September 9, five other human cases of EEE have been reported in two other states — according to Massachusetts and Wisconsin. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention..
Last year, the virus infected 38 people in the United States. This is higher than the previous year as it is being tracked by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than a quarter (10) of them were from Michigan.

In a typical year, there are seven cases nationwide, killing about one-third of people infected with the virus.
Of the 10 cases in Michigan in 2019, 6 died and the other 4 were hospitalized. Three out of four people who survived the EEE infection in the state “have serious neurological problems and continue to receive supportive care either during rehabilitation or at home,” said the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Press Secretary Linsat Finn said. ..
EEE Symptoms, What to Look for
Not all people bitten by EEE-infected mosquitoes are infected with the virus. Many people have mild or no symptoms at all. People under the age of 15 and over the age of 50 are at greatest risk of being affected by EEE.
There is no cure for the EEE virus. However, it does provide support to help critically ill patients with breathing, hydration, and nutrition.
According to the CDC, symptoms of EEE usually appear 4 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The infection is either systemic or encephalitis and is accompanied by swelling of the brain. Some people with EEE have no symptoms at all.
In people who develop a systemic infection, symptoms appear suddenly and can last up to 2 weeks. Includes:
- cold
- heat
- Stagnation
- Joint and muscle pain
In people who develop an encephalitis infection, the following symptoms usually follow a few days after the systemic illness:
- heat
- headache
- Frustrated and restless
- Drowsiness, disorientation
- anorexia
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- Cyanosis is a bluish discoloration of the skin due to poor blood circulation or inadequate oxygenation.
- convulsions
- coma
People who have any of these symptoms should seek medical attention.
How to protect yourself from EEE
The only way to protect yourself from the Triple E virus is to prevent mosquito bites.
The climate is starting to cool, but the mosquitoes that spread EEE are still active. As a result, health officials are urging people living in the 10 affected counties to avoid outdoor activities in the evenings and in the dark, when mosquitoes are most active. They are proposing to cancel outdoor events, especially those that may include children.
This includes events such as late-night sports and games, and outdoor music practice.
In addition, residents need to protect themselves from mosquito bites, stating:
- Apply insect repellents, including the active ingredient DEET or other US Environmental Protection Agency registered products, to exposed skin and clothing and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers outdoors. Apply an insect repellent to your clothing to prevent insect bites.
- Maintain window and door screening to help keep mosquitoes outdoors.
- Drain water from mosquito breeding sites around the house, such as buckets, unused children’s pools, old tires, or similar areas where mosquitoes can spawn.
- Use the net or fans in the outdoor dining area.
Details of aerial pesticide spraying
Targeted application of pesticides to control mosquitoes began Wednesday night in certain areas of the state at high risk of triple E infection.
“We are taking this step to protect the health and safety of Michigan in areas of the state where mosquitoes are known to carry this potentially deadly disease,” said MDHHS’s best medical care. Dr. Johnny Cardan, responsible and deputy director of health, said. news release. “People are spending more time outdoors for COVID-19, so we also need to protect them from mosquito bites.”
Michigan Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development earlier this week temporarily demands mosquito control in some of Michigan’s 10 counties (Barry, Claire, Ionia, Isabella, Jackson, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm, New Weigo, Auckland) Announced urgent rules to do.
If Livingston County is added to the list on Thursday and new human or animal cases are identified, additional areas may also be treated.
The spraying is done using a professional aircraft, starting in the evening and continuing until the next dawn.
State-certified mosquito control specialists spray approved pesticides as ultra-low volume (ULV) sprays, spray very fine aerosol droplets that remain suspended in the air, and kill adult mosquitoes in contact. I will.
They use Merus 3.0. This is the same product used in 2019 when the state implemented an aerial mosquito repellent program.
Merus 3.0 is registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency and MDARD and is labeled for public health use in residential areas. It contains 5% pyrethrin, a plant insecticide extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. Piresulin is commonly used to control mosquitoes, fleas, flies, moths, ants and many other pests and is also approved for use in organic farming.
What are the risks of aerial spraying?
According to state health authorities, the risks are minimal and no special precautions are recommended.
People who are known to be sensitive to pyrethrins can reduce their chances of exposure by staying indoors during treatment. The impact of aerial treatment on surface water and drinking water is not expected. When more than 557,000 acres of monitored Michigan acres were processed in 2019, the adverse effects of humans, animals, or insects associated with aerial processing have not increased.
Aerial treatment is done during the night hours when mosquito activity is active. It is also the time when fish are unlikely to be superficially fed and bees are most likely to be in the hive. However, the owner must cover a small decorative fishpond on the night of spraying. It is not necessary to bring the animal indoors during treatment, but the pet owners involved may choose to bring the animal inside during this period.
When will my area be sprayed?
The spray started Wednesday night and covered over 157,000 acres.
Areas scheduled for treatment on Thursday night Aerial processing zone map:
- Block 5-1 in Kent County.
- Blocks 6-1 in New Eigo, Oceana and Muskegon County and 6-2 in New Eigo County.
- 7-1 blocks in Mecosta County.
- Block 10-1 in Ionia County.
If time and weather permit, the following areas will also be treated on Thursday:
- Block 1-1 and 1-2 in Barry County.
- Block 2-1 in Jackson County.
All other treatment zones will not be treated on Thursday night.
