“I thought it looked sexy and different.”

One of the few Irish people who live permanently in Nepal, Niall Kavanagh has created a new life for himself at the foothills of the largest mountain range in the world.

Born in Templog, Kavanagh left school in 1978 to complete a professional training in mechanical engineering on Bolton Street. “I got a job at a Dublin water pump company before taking on various positions as a welder.”

After branching into marketing, he worked for the US multinational 3M Dn Laoghaire as a regional manager, working in the fields of industry, worker safety, healthcare, and consumer goods.

“I was there from 1990 to 2007. After 17 years of geographic restriction, I wanted to do something different.” At first, he wanted to become a photographer and do some freelance work, but the money was not regular, so Kavanagh decided to study pharmaceutical technology at IT Tallaght with the aim of working in manufacturing.

“Unfortunately, the factory work in Ireland was very weak on the ground, so after completing my studies in 2013, I decided to do something completely different and move to Nepal.”

The idea came to Kavanagh after his son volunteered with the Irish NGO The Umbrella Foundation in Kathmandu. “I thought it looked sexy and different. After thinking about my options in Ireland, I concluded I had nothing to lose and got on the plane.

“When I landed, there was a blackout in the city and I was sitting in the back of a taxi driving through the darkness to a hotel, wondering if I had made a huge mistake.”

But upon meeting volunteers at the charity, which works to alleviate the impact of trafficking, poverty and war on children and their families in Nepal, Kavanagh realized he made the right decision.

“The charity was established in 2005 in response to the growing number of illegal” orphanages “that are neglecting the most basic rights of children – food, education, safe shelter and health care. It is a great charity.”

But instead of volunteering on a daily basis, which he believed should be left to the younger volunteers, Kavanagh decided – after a conversation with a local expert – to work on the earthquake preparedness plan.

“Based on previous records, we expected a big earthquake en route. So I enlisted help from the Nepalese Army, who was in Haiti and saw the damage there. On April 25, 2015, while visiting a farmers’ market, Kavanagh had to put his plan into action. “Weirdly, it could have been worse,” says Kavanagh. “It would have been nighttime, and fortunately for us, the earthquake struck the road and lost some of its strength.”

Kavanagh, whose two adult children live in Australia, has been on the missing list for several days as he has been caring for the injured and making sure the children and volunteers are safe. “It was also difficult to get the message across, especially since there were more than 400 aftershocks in the days following the earthquake. The May 12 attack killed another 200 people.”

In the aftermath of the devastation, Kavanagh volunteered with several rebuilding projects. She also worked on art projects, bottle collections, a battery disposal awareness program, and the Eco-Soap Bank, a nonprofit environmental organization that preserves, sterilizes, and supplies recycled hotel soap to the developing world.

Kavanagh says that cases in Nepal have been closed through a strict lockdown since March this year. “We have 50,000 cases and 300 deaths. Although he doesn’t encounter many former Irish Shepherds, Kavanagh says he meets regularly with Irish mountaineers such as Pat Valve and Noel Hana when they come to climb. “Unfortunately last year, we lost Seamus Lawless on the balcony after we reached the summit of Mount Everest, even though he was really strong that day. Kavanagh has had a visa to live in Nepal since he married his Nepalese wife. “But it’s hard to work here, Nepalis get the preference, which is fair enough.
