Akanereg in MLS San Jose Earthquakes debut: ‘surprise me’

There is one imperative common to all the players on the San Jose Earthquakes roster in 2020: Always be prepared.

The high-energy pressure and discrimination style used by Matthias Almeida is both physically and mentally demanding, and with games appearing in a quick clip in this most bizarre season of 2020, it is difficult for Almeida to play the same starting line-up after the match.

And so, after waiting nearly three years, 18-year-old Jacob Akanerig was called up for the first time in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Portland Timbers.

Playing as a center-back player, Homegrown player made his debut in MLS with a guaranteed performance that left him as an anchor of sorts in the back at night, after Oswaldo Alanis knocked out the match with a knee injury midway and Florian Jongworth was taken to cover for the Mexican International’s exit.

It turns out Akanyirige didn’t quite believe it when he was first told he would be playing.

He said in the video below produced by the club: “I found out it was the day before the match, it was the previous practice, when he told us.” “At first, it surprised me because I wasn’t really expecting it, but then I was really excited, and it’s a good opportunity. I was just looking forward to the match.”

Akanyirige signed his first professional deal when he was 15, was a project from the start and featured four matches last year for the San Jose FC Reno 1868 FC. But in each of those matches, he played only 45 minutes, while his debut on Wednesday with COEX lasted 69 minutes before being substituted.

But with Almeida emphasizing the need to use most of his roster this year for a variety of reasons, Akanrigg seems to have gained more time playing through the stretch of this unique 2020 season.

The player will prepare for the next call.

“All the coaches are training us, and they want everyone to be ready,” Akanrej said. “Everyone should be ready when their chance comes because everyone is part of the team. You can play at any time, so just keep fit, be ready, your chance will come.”
