Johnny Lee Peoples, 67, and his wife, Kathy “Dahlen” Peoples, 65, began to feel symptoms in early August, but did not see them for more than two days in September.

Johnny has served in the US military for over 17 years and retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections a few years ago. Darlene was working for Rowan Family Physics, where she was hired by LabCorp, and was to retire on September 1, before she and her husband died.
Darlen had a fever on August 1st and was tested for coronavirus that week. Shane said she had a negative test on August 10, but she later conducted a positive test at the hospital and believes her family is false negative.
Johnny began to show symptoms on August 5th and tested positive on August 7th. Then, on August 11, both were admitted to the Covid-19 unit of the Novant Health Rowan Regional Medical Center, a local hospital, due to dyspnea due to a previous illness. ..
Durney suffered from high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, and type 2 diabetes, but Johnny had pneumonia two years ago, causing some lung damage, Shane said.
“(September 1st) they were told they had no chance of survival. Dad could live on a ventilator, but never escaped. Mom’s organs function. I didn’t, “Shane said.
The next day, they were placed in the same room next to each other. They were removed from the ventilator and died every few minutes.

“This was the first time ICU staff had dealt with the passing of two families. The hospital staff were excellent throughout.”
The couple survives with three children and nine grandchildren.
