Oklahoma rabies-infected bat “not a plague after 2020”

Oklahoma has had a second rabies outbreak in the last six weeks, and health officials are advised to take precautions against the disease.

The State Department announced this week that rabies-infected bats were found on the border of Chandler in Lincoln County.

It may be easy to feel that this is another wild development of the year, but state epidemiologist Jared Taylor says it’s not unusual.

“It’s not the next plague in 2020,” Taylor said.

But be wary is good. Bats and skunks are the main sources of infection, and skunks tend to further spread the disease in spring and autumn. However, bats carry the risk of not being skunked. Infections from skunks usually involve dramatic clashes with pets, according to Taylor. Bats are not. Their bites are painless and undetectable.
