Plastic face shield has no effect on stopping COVID-19: Research
According to a new study in Japan, plastic face shields do little to help defeat the epidemic of the coronavirus.
The transparent cover was tested in a simulation by Fugaku. World’s fastest supercomputerThis showed that nearly 100% of the airborne droplets less than 5 micrometers in size escaped from the shield. The Guardian reported on Tuesday.
One micrometer is equivalent to one millionth of a meter.
Shields commonly used by restaurant industry workers were also ineffective in trapping large droplets of 50 micrometers, about half of which could escape.
This research was conducted by RIKEN, a government-sponsored research center in Kobe, Japan.
To reach that result, the Fugaku simulation combined airflow with thousands of particles of various sizes.
Makoto Tsubokura, RIKEN’s team leader, said that a regular face mask should be used instead of a face shield.
“Unfortunately, judging from the simulation results, face guards are less effective than masks in preventing droplets from spreading from the infected person’s mouth,” he told the Guardian.
Tsubokura said that those who are not recommended to wear a face mask can take steps to wear a shield.
Fugaku has also conducted other simulations and recently found that face masks made of non-woven fabric are more effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19 than face masks made of cotton or polyester.
