West Nile kills one and hospitalizes five in New York this year
New York City — The West Nile virus infection has killed New Yorkers for the first time since 2018, officials said.
According to city officials, a total of six city dwellers are infected with West Nile, which is usually carried seasonally by certain mosquitoes between late July and October.
According to the release, Queens had two cases, and like Manhattan, Staten Island and Brooklyn each had one case. Authorities said one of the Manhattan cases was believed to have been infected while traveling away from the city.
Health officials have refused to disclose additional information about the incident or death beyond what is included in the release. Those who died have been identified as being 65 years of age or older — a risk factor for illness.
“We mourn the loss of our fellow New Yorkers and urge everyone to take simple precautions to keep themselves and their families safe from mosquito bites,” Health Director Dave Choxie said in a statement. Stated. “When you’re outside, wear mosquito repellents, cover your arms and legs, drain standing water, and install window screens to reduce your risk.”
Officials said New York City hasn’t died in West Nile since 2018.
Researchers at the Ministry of Health have found 413 mosquitoes carrying the virus so far this year. This is said in the release to be 15% higher than the level found at this point in 2019.
To prevent the spread of the virus from mosquitoes, health ministry officials have given 11 pesticide sprays and two treatments to kill mosquito larvae, officials said.
