Strong fighting continues to rage as a result of decades of conflict in the Caucasus region of southeastern Europe. The armed forces in Azerbaijan and Armenia say they have dominance. At the root of the conflict is the conflict over control of the Nagorno-Karabakh mountainous region. It is recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but has been controlled by ethnic Armenians since the 1990s war. Tens of thousands of people were killed in the war and another million had to flee their homes.
