Study: Neanderthal genes may be responsible for COVID patients
Researchers Hugo Zeberg and Svante Paabo have determined that the gene belongs to a group or haplotype that is likely to be of Neanderthal origin. Haplotypes are found in about 16% of Europe’s population and half of South Asia’s population, but are absent in Africa and East Asia.
It is known that modern humans and Neanderthals have mated at various points in history, resulting in more genetic exchange than is still found today.
Genes are one of several risk factors for COVID-19, including pre-existing conditions such as age, gender, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
Zeberg and Pervo, who work at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, have the highest prevalence of certain Neanderthal gene groups among Bangladeshi people, with 63% being haplotypes.
They cited a British study showing that Bangladeshi people are about twice as likely to die of COVID-19 as the general population.
“It’s amazing that the genetic heritage from the Neanderthals has such tragic consequences during the current pandemic,” Paabo said in a statement. “Why should this be investigated as soon as possible now?”
However, Andre Franke, director of the Institute for Clinical Molecular Biology at Keele University in Germany, said the findings had no direct impact on the treatment of COVID-19.
In a comment prior to the final presentation of the study, Franke said one of the interesting questions that arises from the study is why its haploite, unlike most Neanderthal genes, survived to this day.
“Without other risk factors, it’s probably good for a very active immune system,” he suggested.
