Does the child have a runny nose?Ontario screening rules no longer require COVID-19 testing

The latest COVID-19 screening protocol for children in Ontario may mitigate what caregivers describe as a significant and unnecessary burden.

The state government on Thursday afternoon Modified COVID-19 Screening Policy For children attending school or daycare.

The new regulation features a shorter list of symptoms that require a child to be tested for COVID-19. The state said the new rules reflect the latest evidence and were developed in consultation with pediatric infectious disease experts.

“This will allow children to participate in school and childcare as much as possible while minimizing the risk of COVID-19 infection,” said Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Associate Medical Officer, Ontario. I will.

In particular, children will not be removed from school or childcare and will be advised to be tested if they have a runny nose, headache, sore throat, malaise or diarrhea. Children with any of these symptoms are required to go home for at least 24 hours and return only “when they feel good enough to do so.”

However, if your child has more than one of these symptoms, you will be asked to isolate them and contact your healthcare provider for further advice.

These symptoms are “generally associated with many other illnesses,” Yaffe said.

Children experiencing fever, persistent cough, chills, or loss of taste or odor should be isolated for medical advice. This also includes the possibility that your child will need to be tested for COVID-19.

Leigh Anne Jacques, co-owner of Beaches Montessori School, said more than half of the children in her facility have not been allowed to attend since reopening, primarily due to a runny nose. (zoom)

Dr. Jaffe said the updated regulations will increase the ability of parents and family doctors to assess their child’s health. In some cases, healthcare providers may be able to completely avoid the need for a COVID-19 test and provide an alternative diagnosis.

“Schools and day care shouldn’t need a negative COVID test. In fact, they shouldn’t even need a doctor’s note,” Yaffe said at a press conference Thursday.

Abdominal pain and pink eyes have also been completely removed from the list of possible symptoms of COVID-19.

“Almost all had a runny nose”

A childcare company in Toronto said it had been struggling for weeks under previous rules.

Leigh Anne Jacques, co-owner of Beaches Montessori School, said more than half of the children in her center have been sent home or banned since the school reopened in September.

“It’s a huge number of children who are excluded from school because of illness,” Jack said.

“Unfortunately, in our toddler classroom, almost everyone had a runny nose in the first few weeks of school.”

Amy O’Neill, director of the Treetop Children’s Center, also expressed concern about her previous screening policy and said she had burdened her parents by requiring them to take a break from work and take their children to the examination. ..

“This is not a model that works continuously,” she said in Ontario. Continuing issues with a long lineup Wait time for test results.

O’Neill estimated that her center sent about half of the children home for what she considered mild symptoms. She explained that she would call the Toronto Department of Public Health, the Ministry of Health, and the parents of symptomatic children for up to three hours a day.

“Usually in September, I don’t call my parents unless the symptoms are really bad,” she said. “In childcare, I am very accustomed to runny nose, cough, diarrhea, and normal childhood symptoms.”

Education Minister Stephen Lecce said last week that the state would consider revising the list of symptoms requiring a COVID-19 test after a similar move by British Columbia health officials.
