Origen – If there is a lesson to be learned from this year’s events, you should be prepared for any scenario imaginable.

With that in mind, there is no better time for the annual earthquake preparedness event, known locally as the Great Oregon ShakeOut. This year, ShakeOut takes place at 10:15 AM Oct 15, and there’s still time to get involved.

Individuals, companies, schools, religious organizations, community groups and others are encouraged to participate in order to help all concerned prepare in the event of an earthquake emergency. The Earthquake Country Alliance began in Great California ShakeOut as a training and preparedness event that has since spread across the country and beyond.

The ShakeOut event is based on the generally accepted appropriate earthquake response, “drop, cover and carry on.” These measures are designed to protect people from dropping furniture and objects that could become projectiles during an earthquake. People across the state are encouraged to drop, cover, and retain annually the third Thursday in October.

Although individuals and groups can participate however they want, other exercises that can be used during ShakeOut include:

• A basic life safety exercise designed to help victims think through their emergency response.

Decision-making training for group leaders to learn how to deal with post-earthquake issues.

• An advanced operations exercise for crisis team members.

According to shakeout.org, as of Tuesday morning, 236,553 Oregonians have registered to participate in the Great Oregon ShakeOut. There were more than 7,700 Lincoln County participants enrolled, including more than 6,000 school district participants, 650 healthcare people, and more than 450 local government employees.
