The researchers analyzed data from 629,087 women who received 2,327,384 screening mammograms between 1995 and 2015 and followed up to 2017. Women diagnosed with BBD were found to be 2.67 times more likely to develop breast cancer than women without BBD. Women with endemic BBD had a 1.87-fold increased risk.

Women with accidental, nonproliferative BBD were 2.39 times more likely to develop subsequent breast cancer than women without BBD. Women with prevalent proliferative BBD had a 2.85-fold increased risk. In addition, the risk was increased 1.63-fold in nonproliferative women with prevalent BBD.

Researchers hope that their findings will help design individualized breast cancer screening strategies to improve the effectiveness of breast cancer screening.
