Researchers Find out Which Benign Breast Diseases Are Most likely to Develop Cancer
Benign breast disease (BBD), a non-cancerous disease of the breast such as lumps, is known to increase the likelihood of subsequent breast cancer. Currently, a team of Spanish researchers have found that the way BBD is detected as part of a national screening program shows that it is more likely to become cancerous.
The findings of a team led by Professor Xavier Castel, head of the epidemiology department at the Hospital del Mar Medical Institute in Barcelona, Spain, will be presented at the 12th European Breast Cancer Conference on Saturday.
BBD was detected when a woman first joined Breast screening (Usually at age 50 in Spain and many other European countries, Sieving The program) is classified as a “general” BBD, but anything detected in subsequent visits that occur every two years in Spain is classified as an “incident” BBD.
Dr. Marta Román, Principal Investigator in the Epidemiology Division of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, said at the conference: “Our results show that women with benign breast disease diagnosed after the second screening have a significantly higher risk of subsequent breasts than those diagnosed with BBD on the first mammography examination. Hmm.”
The researchers analyzed data from 629,087 women who received 2,327,384 screening mammograms between 1995 and 2015 and followed up to 2017. Women diagnosed with BBD were found to be 2.67 times more likely to develop breast cancer than women without BBD. Women with endemic BBD had a 1.87-fold increased risk.
They also classified BBD as non-proliferative or proliferative. Breast tissue It showed increased growth of certain cells, such as ductal cells found in ductal hyperplasia with overgrowth of cells that line the ducts in the breast.
They found that women with proliferative BBD had a 3.28-fold increased chance of breast cancer and women with non-proliferative BBD had a 1.96-fold increased risk compared to women without breast disease.
Dr. Román said: “We found that proliferative women with BBD had the highest risk of breast cancer. Compared to women without BBD, the risk of breast cancer was almost four-fold increased.”
Women with accidental, nonproliferative BBD were 2.39 times more likely to develop subsequent breast cancer than women without BBD. Women with prevalent proliferative BBD had a 2.85-fold increased risk. In addition, the risk was increased 1.63-fold in nonproliferative women with prevalent BBD.
Researchers hope that their findings will help design individualized breast cancer screening strategies to improve the effectiveness of breast cancer screening.
“The likelihood that a woman will benefit from mammography screening depends on her risk of developing clinically significant breast cancer in her lifetime,” said Dr. Roman. “By taking into account individual risk factors beyond age, we should be able to classify women into groups with different risks of breast cancer. Individual risk-based screening that goes beyond the current“ universal ”recommendations It may increase the effectiveness of breast cancer screening. Develop a risk-based screening approach, including information from the BBD, in addition to other factors, to help predict whether a woman will develop breast cancer during a defined period of time.
“We can consider different screening strategies for each woman based on her personal risk of breast cancer. By changing the screening interval, every year or every few years, mammograms, ultrasound, magnetism, etc. You can change the screening method of. Resonance imaging, or the age range in which women are required to participate in the screening. “
Dr. Román and her colleagues believe that these findings help clinicians understand the various risks associated with BBD and improve the accuracy of breast cancer risk prediction.
In a pre-conference statement, Professor Xavier Castelus said: “Clinicians involved in the management of women with BBD can provide a targeted surveillance strategy, taking into account whether BBD was found on the first or subsequent screening test, in addition to other factors. The information is contained in a separate model that can be used to predict the individual FemaleRisk of developing breast cancer after 5 or 10 years. We tested this in the context of a screening program that also included information about breast cancer, age, family history of breast cancer, and mammography characteristics. “
The team is part of My Pebs. An international randomized controlled trial funded by the European Union will investigate whether risk-based breast cancer screening strategies based on clinical risk scores are more effective than standard screening. Launched in July 2019, this international project will recruit 90,000 participants from six countries and follow up for four years.
Professor Javier Cortes, co-chair of EBCC12, is a clinical researcher in the Breast Cancer Research Program at the Val d’Hebron Institute of Oncology in Barcelona and head of the Breast Cancer Program at the IOB Institute of Oncology in Madrid and Barcelona. Not involved in this study. He commented: “Population-based breast cancer screening programs know that early detection of cancer can save lives, but not just the best way to treat women with cancer that will not be a problem in their lifetime. , May also ask questions, as well as what to do Female With benign breast disease.
“No patient wants to be screened for mammograms more than necessary, but patients and clinicians want to see if they are benign. milk Illness cancer, Can be detected quickly. The results of this study provide us with useful information that can improve the accuracy of breast cancer Create a risk prediction model so that you can adjust your monitoring strategy for patients with this disease. ”
