Legal services giant Epiq Global offline after ransomware attack – TechCrunch
Legal services giant Epiq Global has been hit by a ransomware attack.
The law firm, which provides legal advice and administration that counts banks, credit giants and governments as clients, confirmed the attack on February 29.
"As part of our comprehensive response plan, we immediately put our systems offline worldwide to contain the threat and began working with a third-party forensic firm to conduct an independent investigation," said a statement from. l & # 39; company. "Our technical team is working closely with third-party, world-class experts to resolve this issue and get our systems back online as quickly as possible."
The company's website, however, says it was "offline for maintenance".
A source aware of the incident but who was not authorized to speak to the media said that the ransomware had hit the entire IT infrastructure of the organization in its 80 global offices. According to internal communication to staff that was obtained by TechCrunch, the law firm said that staff should not "go" to their local offices without management approval. Office staff were advised to avoid connecting a device to the network. The communication also said that staff should "turn off Wi-Fi on your laptop before entering the building parking lot" in order to prevent the spread of ransomware.
Many computers were running older versions of Windows, the source said. "Nothing is up to date," said the source.
The source came forward because, in their own words, "we were told not to say anything to customers until we got home."
It is not immediately known what type of ransomware was used in the attack, but Epiq Global said in its statement that there was "no evidence" that data had been stolen. Although ransomware typically infects computers, spreads and encrypts files over a network in exchange for a ransom, some newer and more advanced ransomware families have also exfiltrated company data before encrypting the files and threatened to publish the files unless a ransom is paid.
This week again, Visser, a parts maker for Tesla and SpaceX, was hit by more advanced data exfiltration ransomware. Part of the files stolen from the company were published by the ransomware group.
Epiq spokeswoman Catherine Ostheimer declined to release details of the ransomware, nor did she provide a percentage of the data or computers affected by the attack. Ostheimer also refused to confirm the content of the email obtained by TechCrunch.
None of our specific issues were addressed, including whether the law firm had contacted its clients affected by the attack.
