Loring Mandel Dead: screenwriter and playwright “Counsel and consent” was 91 years old
He has won two Emmy Awards and a Peabody and has written scripts for the films “Countdown”, “Promises in the Dark” and “The Little Drummer Girl”.
Loring Mandel, twice Emmy award winner and playwright who adapted a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel for the Broadway version of the compelling political drama Advice and consent, is dead. He was 91 years old.
Mandel died Tuesday of cancer at his home in Lenox, Massachusetts, said son Alan Mandel The Hollywood Reporter.
A theater specialist, the Chicago native also wrote the scripts for Countdown (1967), an astronaut film starring James Caan and Robert Duvall; the history of cancer Promises in the Dark (1979), with Marsha Mason; and the Mossad thriller The drummer’s little girl (1984), with Diane Keaton.
Mandel has won five Emmy Awards nominations during his career, winning twice: in 1968 for his work on a slice of CBS Playhouse and in 2001 for writing the BBC-HBO TV movie Conspiracy. For the latter, who starred Kenneth Branagh and Stanley Tucci and examined how the Nazis dealt with the “final solution to the Jewish question” during World War II, he also received the Peabody and BAFTA awards.
Mandel adapted the famous novel by Allen Drury from 1959 Advice and consent for a play that opened on Broadway in November 1960. Turning around the controversial approval of a candidate for the post of Secretary of State, he ran for 212 performances and starred Ed Begley, Henry Jones, Kevin McCarthy and Barnard Hughes.
The 1962 big screen version of Columbia Pictures, directed by Otto Preminger, was adapted by Wendell Mayes and presented by Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton, Don Murray and Walter Pidgeon.
Mandel was also president of WGA East in the 1970s, and he received the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award from the guild for his lifetime contribution to television in 2004.
The son of a doctor, Mandel was born on May 5, 1928 in Chicago. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1949 and saw homework in the Korean War, then landed a written job for CBS anthology programs Studio One in Hollywood, The Seven Living Arts and Playhouse 90.
In 1959, his screenplay “Project Immortality” for the director Fielder Cook and Playhouse 90 earned him his first Emmy name.
Mandel was also editor of the CBS soap opera Love of life in 1971-1972, and he received another name Emmy in 1975 for writing an episode of the CBS miniseries Benjamin Franklin’s life.
His articles, scripts, articles and correspondence are kept at Wisconsin Center for Film & Theater Research.
“I have been a bit like a loner in this business my whole life,” said Mandel. said in a 2010 chat for the Oral History of Television: Interviews website. “I have always found that my own level of interest was what attracted me to something. I am not looking for things in a given category.”
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, whom he married in 1950; her sister, Charlotte; his sons, Joshua and Alan, and their respective wives, Laura and Ellen; and her granddaughters, Hannah, Eliza and Natalie.
