A major test to assess whether vitamin D protects against Covid-19
Scientists have launched a new test to investigate whether vitamin D protects against the new coronavirus.
More than 5,000 people are invited to participate in research projects to see if so-called sunshine vitamins have a protective effect on Covid-19.
Researchers at Queen Mary University of London, funded by a virtuality, can reduce the risk and severity of Covid-19 and other acute respiratory infections by correcting vitamin D deficiency in people in the winter. I plan to run a project to see if it is.
All vitamin D tests and supplements are mailed, so people participate in the study from home without the need for a direct visit.
According to researchers, UK residents over the age of 16 can participate if they have not yet taken high doses of vitamin D.
Professor Adrian Martineau, a senior researcher at Queen Mary University of London, said: “There is increasing evidence that vitamin D may reduce the risk of respiratory infections, and some recent studies have shown that people with low vitamin D levels may be more susceptible to the coronavirus. Is suggested.
“Many people in the UK have low vitamin D levels, especially in winter and spring, when respiratory infections are most common.
“Vitamin D deficiency is common in the elderly, overweight, blacks and Asians. All groups at very high risk of getting sick with Covid-19.
“The UK government has already recommended taking low-dose vitamin D supplements in the winter to protect bone health, but whether this affects Covid-19 or protection at high doses. I don’t know if I can provide it against viruses.
“The Coronabit trial tests whether high doses of vitamin D provide protection against winter respiratory infections, including Covid-19.”
Vitamin D is often referred to as Nikko Vitamin because most people should be able to get all the vitamin D they need from sunlight from late March to the end of September.
The body produces vitamin D outdoors by exposing the skin to direct sunlight.
However, from October to early March, people do not get enough vitamin D from the sun.
Official guidance encourages adults and children over the age of 4 to consider taking daily supplements containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D in the fall and winter.
Vitamin D helps maintain calcium and phosphate levels in the body and helps with bone, tooth and muscle health.
The trial will begin after authorities stated in June that there was not enough evidence to support taking vitamin D supplements to prevent or treat Covid-19.
Officials at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) have investigated five studies on the new coronavirus and vitamin D.
They concluded that there is currently no evidence to support taking vitamin D supplements to reduce the risk or severity of Covid-19.
Dr. David Joriff, Principal Investigator of Research at Queen Mary University of London, said: “(This) trial may provide a definitive answer to the question of whether vitamin D provides protection against Covid-19.
“Vitamin D supplements are low cost, low risk, and widely available. If proven effective, they can make a significant contribution to the global fight against the virus.”
