TKO takes a stand on genetically modified mosquitoes
Every year, more than 700,000 people die from vector-borne diseases (VBD), such as malaria, dengue, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis, among others. More than 80% of the global population lives in areas threatened by at least one major vector-borne disease, and more than half are at risk of two or more. Together, these diseases represent a huge tax for economies and can hamper rural and urban development.
Recognizing the urgent need for new tools to combat VBD and in the spirit of fostering innovation, the WHO supports the investigation of all potentially useful technologies, including genetically modified mosquitoes (GMM). A new position statement, released today at a WHO seminar, clarifies the WHO position on the assessment and use of GMMs for the control of vector-borne diseases.
“These diseases don’t go away,” remarked Dr. John Reader, director of TDR, the Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, as he presented a position statement at the seminar. “We really need to think of new tools that could make an impact.”
Statement of new position
In recent years, significant progress has been made in GMM approaches aimed at controlling mosquito populations and reducing their susceptibility to infections, as well as their ability to transmit disease-carrying pathogens. These shifts have led to an often polarized discussion of the benefits and risks of genetically modified mosquitoes.
According to a new WHO statement, computer simulation modeling has shown that GMMs could be a valuable new tool in efforts to eradicate malaria and control Aedes mosquito-borne diseases. The WHO, however, warns that the use of GMMs raises concerns and issues of ethics, safety, governance, accessibility and cost-effectiveness that need to be addressed.
The statement noted that GMM research should be conducted in a step-by-step approach and supported by clear governance mechanisms to assess all health, environmental and environmental implications. He emphasizes that any effective approach to combating vector-borne diseases requires strong and meaningful community engagement. This is particularly important for area-wide control measures such as GMM, as risks and benefits can affect large segments of the population.
Countries and other stakeholders are encouraged to provide feedback on the new statement of position by contacting the WHO at: genetically modified [email protected].
New guideline
Despite the growing threat of vector-borne diseases to individuals, families, and societies, the ethical issues raised by VBDs receive only limited attention. Recognizing this gap, the WHO has issued new guidelines to support national VBD control programs in their efforts to identify and address key ethical issues at stake.
A new guideline entitled “Ethics and Vector-Transmitted Diseases” was published today along with a statement on the position of GMM. Based on a multidisciplinary framework, the guidelines highlight the key role of community engagement in designing and implementing an appropriate, sustainable public health response.
