More than 12,000 migrants, already living in dire straits, fled outside their tents to burn, as the fire destroyed Europe’s largest refugee camp, Moria, on the Greek island of Lesbos. Greek authorities have blamed the fire on a few outsiders, but among refugees, many say local far-right activists have started the fire. There were people on both sides who wanted the camp to disappear. So what exactly happened and why? With the help of a group of young refugee filmmakers and access to a huge archive of fire and subsequent images, Gabriel Gatehouse, International Editor of Newsnight, investigates the events surrounding the fire and the roots of European dysfunctional migration policy. Filmed with Refocusmedialab. Camera, editor and producer: Jack Garland. #BBC #BBCNews #Newsnight Newsnight is the BBC’s premier news and current affairs television program – with strong analysis, discussion, exclusivity and dialogue.
