Hope for new drugs for migraine patients
A recent study by Monash University has shown the effectiveness of a migraine drug called elenumab (Aimobig) in chronic patients, but sadly it is not affordable for most patients.
A study involving 170 patients with frequent severe migraine attacks (chronic migraine headaches) at three specialized headache centers in Australia found that 58.8% of patients were prescribed elenumab three months later each month. Elenumab is one of four new treatment groups known as CGRP monoclonal antibodies, specially designed for migraine headaches. These are the first available medications specifically designed to prevent migraine headaches and have a high percentage of both efficacy and tolerability.
Migraine is a complex brain disorder and is the leading cause of neuropathy in Australia. Approximately 4.9 million Australians suffer from migraine headaches, and 7.6% of Australians suffer from a more impaired form of chronic migraine headaches with more than 15 days of migraine attacks per month.
