Among the most recent films to have a Ramayan metaphor is the Kangana Ranaut-star Judgmentall Hai Kya, released in July of last year. The reference was made in a scene where Kangana’s Bobby takes a position as an understudy for Sita in a stage production of Ramayan 2.0, a modern tale of the epic.

Kalank

Kalank is another of the recent films where the Ramayan benchmark has been used to bring a point back. Leaving the character of Alia Bhatt out of her marital home to learn the music of a courtesan (Madhuri Dixit) symbolizes the crossing of the Lakshman Rekha. When she first meets the character of Varun Dhawan – who sort of represents Ravan – for the first time, an effigy of the Demon King is seen burning in the background.

Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone as the main pair, was another film that referred to the Ramayan. Not only was Ranveer’s character named Ram, but Bhansali also merged a Shakespearean drama with an Indian epic to portray the tale of unhappy lovers.

Nautanki Saala

In Rohan Sippy’s Nautanki Saala, a stage production of modern Ramayan unfolds alongside the behind-the-scenes life of its protagonists. Ayushmann Khurrana, who is called Ram, plays the character of Ravan in the play.

Raavan

Mani Ratnam’s Raavan borrows a lot from the Ramayan but the director gives the film its unique treatment to make it a special watch. The film attempts to explore whether Ravan really was the evil he is meant to be. The film stars Abhishek Bachchan as Beera Mundra, who symbolizes the king of Lanka.

Main hoon na

At Farah Khan’s Main hoon na, the protagonist played by Shah Rukh Khan is called Ram, while his younger half-brother is called Lakshman (Zayed Khan). Suniel Shetty’s antagonist could have been called Raghavan but he symbolizes Ravan.
