‘Brian’s Song’, ‘Roots’ and ‘Purple Rain’ writer dies at 83
Award-winning screenwriter for flagship TV projects Brians Song and Roots has died
LOS ANGELES – William Blinn, screenwriter for flagship TV projects Brians Song and Roots and the movie Prince Purple Rain, has died. He was 83 years old.
Blinn died Thursday of natural cases in a living community in Burbank, Calif., Her daughter, Anneliese Johnson said on Saturday.
It won Emmy and Peabody honors for the 1971 TV movie Brian’s Song, “which dramatized the friendship of Chicago Bears players Brian Piccolo and Gayle Sayers. It was a hit when it first aired and is an enduring favorite of the sports fans and critics.
Last month, the Hall of Fame Sayers running back passed away at 77.
Blinn’s work on Roots, the successful 1977 miniseries adapted from Alex Haley’s book on his African-American ancestors in slavery and freedom, won an Emmy and a Humanitas Award.

Hailing from Toledo, Ohio, Blinn’s earliest TV credits included the 1960s shows Rawhide, Bonnaza, and My Favorite Martian. He went on to create and produce shows, including Starsky & Hutch, The Rookies and Pensacola: Wings of Gold, in a career that spanned five decades.
Brian’s Song, starring James Caan as Piccolo and Billy Dee Williams as Sayers, portrayed the two bonds when they became roommates on the road, rare at the time for black and white gamers. They became closer when Piccolo was diagnosed with cancer that turned out to be terminal in 1970.
Blinn and Albert Magnoli wrote Purple Rain from 1984, directed by Magnoli.
Along with her daughter, Blinn’s survivors include her son, Chris, and grandchildren.
