Students Celebrate Birthday of Popular Children's Author Dr. Seuss with Play | New
ANDERSON Thing 1 with blue hairy head jumped down the hall of the Indiana Christian Academy and then disappeared into a classroom.
Moments later, the cat in the hat, also known as the fifth grader Noah Jones, entertained sophomores of the school, many wearing red and white striped paper hats, with the familiar chaos of the book of the same name. He and his fifth-grade classmates staged Monday for their younger classmates, starting with preschool.
It was fun. It took a bit of work, he said. You had all these strange characters you had to read with.
The special presentation was part of a national reading celebration involving a variety of classroom activities in honor of Theodore Geisel, affectionately known as Dr. Seuss. Geisel is the author of dozens of popular children's books, many of which have political subtext, including How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Green Eggs and Ham and Horton Hears a Who, many of which have also been made into films.
Fifth grade teacher Erica Reasoner, who told the farce, which imitated a classic Greek play, with choir, said that staging was part of the norm for fifth grade. It has just gone back in time to coincide with the national celebration of Dr. Seuss, which takes place every year on March 2.
We wanted it to be at a preschool level, she said.
Although the play was previously written by a staff member, the students did everything else, explained Reasoner, including making the props and costumes. They even filmed their rehearsals, watched them and criticized their performances.
They must have learned everything, don't turn your back on the crowd, she said. This gives them an idea of how difficult it is to play a piece.
The Noahs family, including his mother, Bethany Jones, his father, Adam Jones, and his 2-year-old brother, Bennett, were in the audience to support him.
I work here as a librarian, so I'm always happy to see them playing books, she says. It brings books to life. It makes them want to read more because they can see how fun reading can be.
