Chellsie Memmel had fun with gymnastics – and maybe more
When Chellsie Memmel began trying out some of her old gymnastics skills, her father – and a former coach – pointed out that the 2021 World Cups were for individual events. She should not train all four events, he said, selecting and choosing the ones she wants to do.
Then Memmel laughed. She is the 2005 World Champion and is part of the US team that won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics. She is now 31, with two young children, and has not done elite gymnastics in eight years.
“I didn’t think about it at all,” she told USA TODAY Sports. “It’s just, ‘Oh hey, this is fun. “

Memmel makes no promises and no commitments. But her skills came back with so much ease that she was curious what more she could do – and where it might take her.
“I’m going to keep playing and start doing more and see what happens,” she said. “I felt good and I had fun.”

Memmel tried to return before the London Olympics but did not get a plea for a national championship after falling to balance in qualifying. Memmel and her father, Andy, protested, saying they had only been shown to be prepared for one event and all four would compete.
But U.S. gymnastics declined to reconsider, and Memmel retired in November 2012.
He trains at the parent-owned gym in the Milwaukee area and is an international level judge. She and husband Kory have two children, son Dashel (5) and daughter Audrielle, 2 years old.
At the end of 2018, Memmel began publishing the weekly “Chellsie Challenge, ”Fitness exercises that she did herself in the gym to improve. They were a big hit, as much because of the motivation they gave people to move, as well as some of the things she dropped from her jaw she tried, like squats with a gun on a high bar.
She also started posting videos of her work “gymnastics for adults“.
“It just showed that you don’t have to stop doing something you love if you’re not going to be competitive or if you just want it out of pure joy. So I started all over again,” Memmel said. “If I can inspire, especially moms. It seems like a lot of compromise. I know I was happier and I feel like I’m a better mom when I do things for me. “
The physical demands of gymnastics are unrelenting. Although there are several outlaws – Oksana Chusovitina he still competes in his 40s – most elite athletes work into their early to mid-20s. So as Memmel started playing around with her old skills, she was surprised not only by how quickly they came back, but also by how well she felt in her body.
She started doing more, and the more fans saw, the more they wanted. People began to make suggestions to her and persuade her to try her skills on the balance she was working on the floor.
“With social media, people see what you’re doing and they like, ‘Try it! Try it on the beam!’ You’ve read enough of it, it’s like, ‘I guess I might try it too,'” she said.
By last summer, what used to be a family joke had gained legitimacy. What she showed on the floor and her balance would hit her from the world team.
On Monday, Memmel posted a video of himself doing her dismantling bundle for the first time in eight years – it was on a mat across the pit, but she still laid it down almost perfectly – and a message saying “the seed was planted.”
“Maybe start practicing three days a week and doing it a little more structured, like numbers,” said Memmel, who said she only does gymnastics for an hour or two, twice a week. “Doing things I wish I could put into a routine, do it more and see how it feels.”
Although Memmel has repeatedly stressed that she doesn’t commit to anything, she said it would be fun to have another skill named after her – which will require her to do so at the World Championships or at the Olympics. She plays with a spiky Arab – a back-to-back in the twilight that continues into the somersault in striking position – for the beam, but so far she has only done so at the beam of the floor level.
First, though, she needs to see how her body reacts to things jumping. But she plays hard, and so does her father.
“It’s always like, ‘Why not? “I think that would be fun,” Chellsie Memmel said. “The other day after we talked about it, he’s like, ‘I think this would be a few good passes for you to try. “I was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let’s get back up there! “Because I didn’t roll a lot.”
No matter what happens in the coming months, Memmel said she was blown away by all the encouragement and support.
“I’m happy that I was able to inspire people to continue doing gymnastics,” she said. “Or I just feel like ‘OK, I don’t have to stop because I like to do that. “
