Doctors at the Denver-Colorado Children’s Hospital need help from donors about the potential treatment of COVID-19.
People who have recovered from the coronavirus can donate plasma to help those who are still infected with the virus. This process is called convalescent plasma. The plasma of a recovered person contains antibodies to kill the virus. The plasma is injected into patients who are currently ill and cannot make enough antibodies to fight the virus.
Dr. Kailuanen, Medical Director of Transfusion Services, said that this was not a cure, but a way to reduce the viral load in patients and help them stay ahead of the virus. This treatment is only available to those in the most at-risk ICU due to the difficulty in obtaining plasma.
“The testing for the COVID-19 virus must be confirmed to be eligible for donation and must be good for 14 days,” said Annen. “I think it was difficult for everyone because many people are sick and couldn’t take the test, so they’re trying to find someone who has both components to make a donation.”
Colorado Children’s Hospital, one of three hospitals in the country, collects plasma along with Mount Sinai in New York City.
Dr. Anen said it was too early to determine if this treatment would be effective in patients with COVID-19, but because convalescent plasma was previously used for H1N1, previous SARS, and Ebola hemorrhagic fever, There are precedents where this effect is believed.
