Residents of People County go fishing for fun
Mayo Lake is one of Roxboro’s most popular attractions.
“We average about 500,000 vehicles on average,” said park supervisor Jeremy Royster. “About 400,000 people come here for hiking.”
Fishing is a major asset on Mayo Lake.
“The lake is really clean,” Royster said. “It’s an easy place to fish. We have good access here, including a free fishing dock behind the office. There are plenty of natural features in the lake for fishing – especially with brush and aquatic habitats.”
The tournaments emphasize the popularity of Lake Mayo in fishing.
“From February to June, we usually do one fishing tournament a month,” Royster said. “The participants catch five fish, and we estimate the heaviest total mass of five. The winner receives a cash prize. “
Royster includes the younger crowd in water parties.
“We do the fishing derby several times a year for the kids,” Royster said. “We rate in several categories – the longest, shortest, smallest and largest fish, as well as the highest fish caught. Winners take fishing boats. “
Outside of the tournament, the popularity of fishing in Person County is dying in the summer.
“February, March and April are the biggest fishing times,” Royster said. “October, November and December are also popular. The bass fisherman told me fishing is better if it’s cooler because of the clear water. “
As with everything else under the sun, fishing is one of the many activities affected by the coronavirus.
“We canceled our tournaments because of the virus,” Royster said. “We don’t want to risk exposing people to anything.”
However, humans are still allowed to fish.
“I would encourage anyone to stick to the six-foot rule,” Royster said. “If you want to weigh the fish, take it away from the viewer.”
