Mass test at Midlands Prison after 5 prisoners test positive for Covid-19
After the outbreak of the coronavirus, a mass test is underway in the largest prison in the country.
Five prisoners tested positive for Covid-19 at Midlands Prison in Portraitish, which is part of the prison.
They are all isolated from the remaining 800 prisoners.
Prison managers take steps to prevent the spread of the virus by testing all prisoners and staff.
Local Sinn Féin party TD Brian Stanley says measures need to be taken to prevent it from spreading to the community.

“Many people in the area work in prisons-prison officers, cleaning staff, administrative staff.
“Obviously, there is a huge risk in that it is carried out by the community, and there are concerns about the safety of staff and prisoners.”
Mr Stanley said the prison moved swiftly to take action to contain the outbreak.
“It is also imperative that the HSE here in Midland work fully together and provide all assistance to prison services in terms of limiting this.”
