Family party photos from driveways keep relationships alive during COVID-19 isolation

Photo aisle may not be the best background for photography, but if you’re a professional photographer, choices are limited as millions of Australians keep an eye on the Government’s message to “stay home”.
Maja Szumylo, photographer from the Gold Coast she uses it as an opportunity to connect with families who are socially isolated.
“I’ve been thinking of many different ways to help myself with my skills … and I believe we should somehow stay connected,” she said.
Ms. Szumylo came across the #thedrivewayproject, where families were photographed in their driveways.
This triggered the connection she was looking for and made her offer free mini-recordings in an effort to create a positive outlook for the community.
“They [families] they love it, they absolutely love it, ”she said.
“It brings me back some of the joy of the times we go through. And families love photos.”
Ms. Szumylo came across a project from Photographer Darwin Francesco Fugue.
Ms Fuga said she was pretty down after learning she was shutting everything down.
“It also meant that my business would not continue for now,” she said.
Like Mrs. Szumylo, she wondered what she could do to bring the community together and have fun.
“I thought we could send really, really nice messages from the roadways so we all feel like we’re in this together,” she said.
“We are all in our own homes, separated, but we all go through the same. And if we are positive, it will be better for the outcome.”
Birthday parties, family with their instruments, and even a host of family members are some of the creative ways Ms Fuga caught people on the project.
Ms Fuga said many photographers across the country were concerned about her repeating the project in their neighborhoods.
“It’s phenomenal, and it cheers me up to be out of work, too,” she said.

Ms. Szumylo contacted Ms. Fuga to thank her for working on the project.
“I think it’s really phenomenal that we continue to share ideas and make this world a better place, wherever we can,” she said.
Security is something Ms. Szumylo keeps in mind as she shoots.
“Obviously I just keep my distance, which is sometimes difficult to manage … but I use my zoom lens so I’m more than 10 meters away,” she said.
“I’m pretty sure. I do it once or twice a week, and I stay home the rest of the time.”
At times like these, Ms. Szumylo said that it was easy to get rid of fear and that we needed to remind ourselves who we really were.
“You look at the photo and remember who you are and who your family is,” she said.
