Suspected carcinogen leads to another metformin recall, this time by Missouri-based Nostrum Labs
Since the FDA noticed a possible carcinogen in popular diabetic metformin earlier this year, the list of companies recalling their versions has grown steadily.
On Monday, Nostrum Laboratories declared its reminding voluntarily two batches of his metform 750 mg prolonged-release tablets because samples found higher than allowable levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).
The Missouri-based company did not disclose the exact number of bottles involved in the recall, and aNostrum spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. According to the FDA, the lots contain packages of 100 metformin tablets each.
The move from Nostrum Labs marks the latest in a series of metformin recalls due to potentially carcinogenic impurities.
The FDA first noticed abnormally high levels of NDMA in extended-release metformin samples in May. Recalls immediately followed. The first round came from generic players Apotex, Amneal, Lupine, Marksans and Teva.

Lupine in July withdrew all remaining batches of its extended-release metformin after finding high levels of NDMA in samples. Marksans initially targeted a single batch of 500 mg tablets at the request of the FDA, but last month withdrew an additional 76 batches covering different package sizes.
The list has grown even further since then.
Virginia-based Granules Pharmaceuticals has a 12-lot recall on file with the FDA. In August, New Jersey-based Bayshore Pharmaceuticals withdrew one batch of each of its 500 mg and 750 mg metformin tablets. Indias Sun Pharma joined in September, recalling a batch of its Riomet ER containing 747 bottles of the metformin product off the US shelves.
