Notre Dame cheering meant a party on Saturday night (1993 ND vs. FSU)
Part of the very cool thing Notre Dame does without any other sports is playing some of their classic games. This Saturday was the second straight showing, showing the classic “Game of the Century” from 1993 against Florida State.
Some stars of the day for Notre Dame helped preview the game Saturday night in the role of Lee Becton, Jeff Burris and Shawn Wooden, along with writers Eric Hansen and Tom Noie, who also participated in the comments. It was fun to watch parts over five months old and everyone needed a lot of attention, and available if you were looking for a way to kill a few hours in the coming days or weeks.
Whenever I have tried watching old games in the past, I find it hard to get into them too much. You know the result and maybe the last run or the final game leads to excitement, but this one pulled me in, and I found myself back at the computer tonight to keep checking and watching a couple things, instead of checking TV on a Saturday night.
I look at it again all these years, several things have stuck, so I’ll share them here. We’ll see if you agree
-If Notre Dame football ever has another return to uniforms of that era, can they go ahead and NBC go on their return graphics? Beautiful. I also liked how old the town board used to be when it was thrown into television.
– No matter how many times I see OJ Simpson or hear his voice during that game, it will 100% never be strange.
-How many explosives would it be if only one of the five different things were a little different?
- Ray Zellars falls to third in the first possession of the game. Knows that Notre Dame scored early points?
- Lake Dawson’s fall is 21-7 and is played on short ground before halftime. If he doesn’t miss this second pass, then the second chance is more than 21-7 at the half.
- Jeff Burris was one of the best players on the field that day. Still, he needed to have at least three interceptions to go along with those two rushing touchdowns. Oh, things ended well that day. I will say that Burris does not get the love of Notre Dame fans years later, which he is absolutely worthy of.
It’s easy to let time do that and forget how dominant that offensive line is. Imagine being Bob Davie a few short years later and thinking that firing Joe Moore was a good idea.
Florida State needed pretty much everything to go right just to have a chance in the end. That is the end result closer than the game was played, and almost 27 years later you wonder how a so-called “expert” could have watched and voted for Florida State, number one after ball games.
Still an enjoyable night regardless of the view. If you get the time that is classic and Charlie Jones in the call only brings back warm memories.
