DOH advises Pennsylvania residents to limit screen time and protect eye health

Harrisburg, PA – Secretary of Health Rachel Levin advised Pennsylvania residents to limit screening times and schedule annual eye examinations to protect eye health.
“During COVID-19, we see more access to technology, more digital learning and entertainment, and more Pennsylvania citizens, including young learners, increasing screen time,” said Dr. Levine. “To prevent eye strain, young people and working professionals in Pennsylvania can take breaks, spend time outdoors where possible, continue to hydrate, and book annual eye exams. It’s a good idea to limit screen time. Vision is a gift and you need to protect your health and welfare as you adapt to lifestyle changes. “
To avoid hours of distance learning, visual discomfort and eye strain from work, the Ministry of Health suggests:
- Place the electronics at least arm-length apart and slightly below your line of sight to protect your eyesight and posture.
- Alternate online consumption wherever possible, such as reading a physical book instead of an e-book or listening to a video instead of watching a video.
- Adjust the screen brightness and contrast to a comfortable level.
- Take a break outdoors when possible to control the progression of myopia.
- Keep hydrating, eat well, and exercise well.
- Flashes regularly to keep your eyes dry and tired.And
- Have an annual eye exam.
“For students, this year’s list for the new semester may have looked different, but it’s still important to have an annual eye exam,” Dr. Levine said. “Testing a child’s vision by an eye care professional can help them to achieve greater classroom success, social development, and better lifelong health. By maintaining, adults can protect themselves from chronic health, death, falls, injuries, social isolation, depression and other psychological problems and even improve sleep. “
