DVIDS – News – Titans respond to Izmir in the aftermath of the earthquake

The 425th Air Force Base Squadron stationed in Izmir, Turkey, was affected by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that occurred on October 30, 2020 near the city. Team members from Air Force Base No. 39 Wing, based at Incirlik Air Force Base, Turkey, responded quickly to ensure 425 ABS safety, mental health and recovery operations.

A select team of pilots was dispatched to Izmir to assist geographically separated units stationed there within 48 hours of the event, and included flight crew, engineers, financial and mental health professionals and a chaplain.

“Incirlik’s command was very quick to respond,” said Lieutenant Colonel Dustin Thomas, commander of the 425 ABS. “Geographical separation can make you feel like you are alone, but the team at Incirlik is very involved and has shown it. I was talking to Incirlik leadership the day after the earthquake and they were providing everything they could think of to meet whatever needs we might have.”

The epicenter occurred approximately nine miles off the coast of Turkey, but could be felt nearly 200 miles away and damaged many buildings, eight of them collapsed in Izmir, killing 114 people and injuring more than a thousand.

“Right after that happened, I saw all the damage and was wondering if I was really safe in the event of another earthquake … It was a very emotional time,” Tech said. George Covington, Number 425 Chief Personnel at ABS. “Your sense of security gets spoiled and pressures you, so it was a relief to see people from Incirlik come out very quickly and help us feel taken care of these things that we are not fully equipped to do on our own here.”

While many of the damaged buildings remain structurally intact, the surface damage was sufficient to render them uninhabitable, forcing residents to find temporary housing and even find entirely new homes.

Incirlik’s civil engineers were part of the team that was sent to reach, document and advise on pilots’ homes in the area and the buildings used by US and allied military units.

“There is a clear damage that looks worse than it is,” said First Lt. Julie Heizer, the flight attendant for quality assurance in the 39th Civil Engineering Squadron. “This week we inspected 21 government facilities and 13 homes and found that they were all structurally sound. The damage was mostly superficial which is what we expect to see after the building withstood an earthquake like this. There is restoration work to be done, but I am happy everyone is fine and they can Return to work, knowing the buildings are safe. “

While cracked walls and collapsed property may be the most obvious damage, the event may also cause some team members to vibrate from the inside, so pastors, first sergeants and mental health professionals have been provided to help those affected deal with the aftermath.

“A traumatic event can leave a feeling of tension and isolation, so it is important to communicate as quickly as possible,” said Major Sharu Stokes Williams, leader of Mental Health Expedition No. 39 for the medical group. “We are pleased to provide support not only for the 425 pilots, but also for the US Army and NATO forces stationed here which may not have easy access to emotional, spiritual and mental care assistance, because everyone should have the ability to receive the care they need.”

The rapid response and coordination between the 425 ABS and 39ABW emergency response showed a healthy state of communication, preparedness and teamwork despite working on the opposite sides of the country.

Thomas said, “I’m really proud of the 425th ABS member.” “They are very flexible and quickly thought of helping not only their fellow pilots, but their neighbors and the people we work with every day. It is also very reassuring to see Incirlik support in action, to notice the boosting emotional effects of showing interest and care for all those affected. He tells me that regardless of the challenge. That our team faces. ”
