Irish Coronavirus: Deaths, ICU Admissions, Hospitalizations Significantly Reduced from Peak-CSO
According to the latest CSO statistics, the percentage of people who die from Covid-19, are admitted to the ICU, and are admitted to the hospital is well below the initial peak of the virus.
The overall mortality rate is 26 per 1,000 confirmed cases. It hit a high of 74 per 1,000 in April, but dropped to just 5 in September and 3 per 1,000 last month.
Nphet has repeatedly warned, but the deaths are usually far behind the surge in incidents.
With 688 hospitalized in just seven days, the peak of hospitalization returned to late March.
The latest figures for the week ending October 30 show that only 126 people were hospitalized, even though there were more than 400 cases above the corresponding peak in late March.
Less than five were admitted to the ICU in the week leading up to October 30, but 95 were admitted during the seven days ending March.
The overall ICU admission rate was 9 per 1,000 confirmed cases, which was also the highest at 27 per 1,000 confirmed cases in March, but 5 per 1,000 and 10 in September. It decreased to only 3 per 1,000 in a month.
The reduced mortality rate may be due to good knowledge of the treatment of the virus, increased vigilance around nursing homes, and young demographics of people infected with the second wave of the virus.
Statistics also support the claim that the overwhelming burden of the disease is borne by people over the age of 65.
It continues to have the greatest impact on older age groups, with 64% of all Covid-19 deaths identified so far in the age group over 80 years.
Only 24 of the 1,908 people who died in Covid-19 in Ireland are under the age of 44, according to the latest CSO statistics.
109 people between the ages of 45 and 64 died of the disease.
Data show that of the 133 people under the age of 64 who died, 116 were in underlying health.
The most common underlying disease found in people who died of Covid-19 was heart disease, which was found in 44% of cases.
From 15,570 confirmed deaths to 1,568 deaths from people with underlying illness, the mortality rate for this group is 10%.
