Outlander actor Duncan Lacroix ponders heartbreaking death of Murtagh
There is no new episode of Outlander this week, giving fans of the series some breathing space to manage their grief over the heartbreaking death of fan favorite Murtagh Fitzgibbons.
In a major departure from the book series, Jamie’s godfather survived the Battle of Culloden and served as chief regulators, a group of settlers who took action against the British government before the Revolutionary War.
But Murtagh couldn’t go beyond his destiny forever. In the episode broadcast last Sunday, he was killed during the Battle of Alamance, an altercation between regulators and red coats, which some historians consider to be the spark of the American revolution. Jamie tried to save him, even bring Claire to his makeshift medical tent, but there was no hope; he was too badly injured.
On Instagram, actor Duncan Lacroix reflected on the death of his character, saying the most beautiful farewell to his character this week.
“Well, those of you who have seen episode 7 know that this is the greatest farewell from you and this guy,” he wrote. “My time on Outlander has been magical and I regret not mixing it with the cast and the team. A sincere thank you for all the messages around the EP. And for having taken the old coot in your hearts. it’s not a cliché to say that your fans make it so special. RIP Murtagh ? “
Several of his co-stars reacted to the post in the comments, mostly with sad-faced emojis. Sophie Skelton wrote: “Nooooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ????”, while Sam Heughan left a kind note to Lacroix: “A wonderful man, actor and storyteller. episode. Crying every time. Miss you bud.x “
But since Outlander is a time travel story (and a TV show that wisely uses flash backs), there is a chance that we have not seen the last of Murtagh (or Lacroix). He told Collider that he had been chosen for six seasons of the show, and when specifically asked to return to the show, he simply said, “I don’t know that!”
