View | The epidemic does not care about your personal freedom
I’m no stranger to anxiety, I’ve struggled with it twice a week for over 30 years as the next column deadline approaches. But my current anxiety has a different order and reminds me of living in California. Stay with me.
When I lived in San Jose right above the San Andreas Fault in the mid-1980s, I was always a little anxious, if unconsciously. I had a baby, and my workplace was 10 miles from the house. What if an earthquake happened and I couldn’t reach it? Obviously I was going to run home quickly.
It was only after I returned to the East that I realized the extent of the stress from the earthquake. In Florida, where hurricanes provide a lot of warnings, I began to notice that I was more relaxed. I felt my shoulders drop an inch or two. They hung around my ear like anxiety rocks for four years. I grew better than I had been in years and I started every day to be grateful that the earth was solid.
Coronavirus has brought anxiety back again. It hovers over us like a bird of prey, looking for a fragile form of life. Yes, I have been given an anthropomorphic form of covid-19, but even doctors and scientists do. I’ve heard CNN’s Sanjay Gupta say dozens of times, “The virus doesn’t care.”
I wouldn’t care about COVID-19 on the other hand, but we must. The challenge for scientists, clinicians and political leaders is to maintain a manageable level of anxiety without causing more anxiety. I’d like to tell you yoga is the trick for me, but it’s really a vodka. Apparently, drinking is on the rise, and smoking is resurfacing, says Marlboro maker Altria. Google searches for “anxiety” reached their highest level in 16 years last week, according to data analysis firm DataTrek. Meanwhile, searches for “restaurant” and “shopping center,” we say, are underperforming.
From here, the news gets very bleak. We are entering the holiday season and the flu season, and many struggle to celebrate in the absence of friends and loved ones. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says we should only gather outdoors, which is fine if you live in southern climates.
But what about the people in the North, if any of them remain? Most of them seem to have immigrated to South Carolina, as local Republicans are concerned that they will shift the state from red to blue. Urban residential life is not well suited to even small gatherings during an epidemic. But, then, perhaps our experiences make us more creative – and more conscious of our blessings.
Given the risks, it is difficult to understand why some people prefer to put themselves and others at risk rather than take the simplest precautions. We’ve heard the mantra hundreds of times: wear a mask, avoid large gatherings, and social distancing. We’ve also heard that if everyone plays well (and is left alone) for two weeks in a row, we will be able to bring the pandemic under control. Two weeks nothing.
However, there are those who prefer to follow President Trump’s lead in the mask-free wanderlust citing his speedy recovery from the Coronavirus rather than succumbing to what they see as misguided group thinking. This position may be Trump’s most demonic contribution to the United States.
Being curious, I’ll sometimes ask people why not wear a mask, which is a risky proposition in and of itself. Here in the Bible Belt, many say they have placed everything in God’s hand. But the gift of free will was based on the premise of intelligent life. Predictions of constantly rising infection and death rates are based on current trends of stupid behavior, but it is not certain that we are committing stupidity. Besides, the alternative to voluntary acquiescence is much worse. President-elect Joe Biden promised to encourage mask mandates and order lockdowns if he has power.
I’m no more inclined than the next dissident to fall into line, but what are we saying we’re fighting and getting this thing done quickly?
Otherwise, the Democrats might force us to meditate, too.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
