A magnitude 5.3 earthquake hits Banda Aceh

Jakarta (Antara) – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit the capital of Aceh province, Banda Aceh, early Saturday morning, although no tsunami warning was issued.

The agency stated in its official Twitter account that the earthquake, which occurred at 1:33 am local time, had its epicenter 30 km northeast of Banda Aceh at a depth of 10 km.

People felt the earthquake in Banda Aceh at the Mercalli Modified Intensity Scale (MMI) IV and in Lhokseumawe on the MMI scale II to III.

An earthquake from MMI IV can be felt indoors and outdoors by many people, with windows or doors creaking and audible wall sounds.

Meanwhile, some people felt the MMI II earthquake resulting in the vibration of the suspended light materials, while the MMI III earthquake inside could be felt like the movement of a truck.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 could cause significant damage to the Earth.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or material losses.

A local geophysics station reported that an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit Aceh on October 19, although no tsunami warning had been issued.

The earthquake came four days after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Meulaboh district in Aceh on October 15th.

Aceh had borne the brunt of the 9.1-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami on December 26, 2004, with hundreds of thousands of people losing or losing their lives.
