Update: Positive COVID-19 cases at Whitefish Valley Public School
Thunder Bay — An individual associated with the Whitefish Valley Public School in Hymers, southwest of Thunder Bay, tested positive for COVID-19.
The person is not a student, is currently at home and is being monitored by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
In a late Wednesday afternoon announcement, TBDHU said individuals were “at school while infected,” while students, staff, and community members said they were “not at high risk at this time.” ..
The Health Unit said it has begun a comprehensive public health survey of cases to assess possible exposures in close collaboration with the school and the Lakehead District Board of Education.
All students and staff can continue to attend school directly, but it is recommended that you continue to use the COVID-19 state screening tools before attending school daily.
Health and school board staff will continue to monitor the situation over the next two weeks.
62 active cases across northwestern Ontario
The Northwestern Health Unit reports one new positive COVID-19 test result, bringing the total number of active cases in the jurisdiction of the NWHU and Thunder Bay District Health units to 62.
The individual lives in the Kenora area of NWHU.
In a statement Wednesday afternoon, the health unit stated that follow-up between the person and his contacts had begun according to the protocol.
There are currently 10 active cases in the NWHU coverage area.
Earlier Wednesday, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported three new cases, including those that required patient hospitalization.
Details were also given on a case where staff were tested positive and declared outbreaks in a section of a nursing home at a care facility in Southbridge Roseview.
Currently, there are 52 active cases in the TBDHU coverage area. This is primarily due to the surge in positive test results over the past two weeks associated with the Thunder Bay pickleball facility and two supportive housing facilities.
State officials are expected to decide on Friday whether to move the Thunder Bay region from the lowest (green zone) within Ontario’s COVID-19-compliant framework to the yellow zone.
Under the framework, this results in some additional restrictions on the virus: “enhanced target enforcement, fines, and enhanced education to limit further infections.”
