The children of Christchurch were given an adventure “gift” by a Red Zone activist

Tears flow as children unveil a memorial bench in Christchurch’s Red District for Evan Smith – the man considered the “supreme hero” of the earth destroyed by the earthquake.

Smith died on August 28 of this year after a long battle with liver cancer. He was 68 years old.

Smith led an expedition to see earthquake-devastated areas along the Avon River turned into a park. After his death, his friend Peter Beck described him as “the supreme hero of East Christchurch” after the earthquakes.

A memorial bench, made from a tree that was cut down in the red, is placed on Adventure Ave, a vacant lot now managed by children from fourth to sixth grades of Banks Avenue School.

Schoolchildren revealed the seat on Thursday, and they threw a small party that led to tears.

Keegan Firster, 12, a former Banks Street student, was at the party and said he has a very strong connection to Smith.

“He showed me everything I know now.”

Keegan said seeing the finished chair was “a miracle.”

“Although I am very sad [Smith’s] He’s not here with us, I’m glad he’s now in a better place. “

Pupils of Banks Avenue School performed Karakia and sang the lovely Billie Eilish song together, as Smith loved the music.

This teddy bear, named Evan Bear, is the school’s mascot. She has an earring in her left ear, like Smith.

The school’s mascot, named Evan Bear – an ancient teddy bear found in a nearby river – was also present at the party. Bear wears earrings like Smith and has a leather collar that recalls Smith’s leather jacket.

Fifth grader Joel Patterson, 10, said his time with Smith “really means a lot to me”.

“He was a great man.”

Smith’s battle to turn the Red District into a park ensured that Banks Street would acquire its own plot of land in the Red District.

Pupils farm the area and build a bike path and huts to play in.

Principal Tony Burnside told the students that they might forget the reading and writing lessons from school, “but you will never forget to take part in the adventure and Evan has given you this gift.”
