Child Weight Gain Related to Leptin Producing Ability: Study-Health

It has long been established that the hormone leptin is released from the body’s adipose tissue and tells the brain how much fat is stored in the body. The more body fat you have, the higher your leptin levels. The brain uses this information to regulate a person’s appetite and food intake.
Leptin levels vary from person to person, but about 10-20% of obese people have the same leptin levels as people of normal weight. This change casts doubt on the role of leptin in weight regulation.
In a study published in Diabetes, scientists screened the genomes of more than 55,000 people for genetic mutations that affect leptin levels. They identified five new genetic mutations that play a role in regulating leptin levels.
One variation, Vel94Met, reduces the amount of leptin produced by the body, but is found only in individuals of African ancestry. Young people with this variation are at increased risk of developing obesity, but not for adults with variations that tend to weigh the same as other adults.
This finding supports the theory that people become less sensitive to leptin with age. Leptin administration to obese adults has proven ineffective in controlling their weight.
“This new knowledge of the effects of leptin on youth weight management needs to be followed up in further studies to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying this age-dependent relationship between leptin and BMI.” Said Associate Professor Tuomas Kilpelainen.
