On Monday night, she sent her sons a call to a Hawaiian luau. Then on Tuesday she decorated the house. The boys dyed and worked their limbs.

“They are surprised,” Newport said. “They are excited that they will wake up the next day and do these things instead [thinking about] when they will see their friends again or go back to school or see family again. “

Wednesday had a Lego theme, and later this week it will be all about solving mysteries.

“I intended for my kids to eat food with blindfolds and not know what they were eating,” Newport said. “Of course, I’ll make it safer for them.”

Newport is not the only parent who gets creative. The rest do children YouTube videos about how to make yogurt or straw.

“We built a fort and from there we watched movies,” said Priya Shah, who has a 10-year-old son and is a teacher at Skinner North Elementary School on the North Side.

Shah also taught her son Ayan to sew pillows for his cat, Marsh.

He also records video postcards for grandmothers, creates music and plays chess online.

“I think the activities helped him because they allowed him to get into that creative space where he doesn’t have to think about what’s going on,” Shah said.

Shah’s school began distance learning earlier than in the rest of the district. In recent weeks, she has been busy teaching and making sure her son, who goes to the National Teachers’ Elementary Academy near Chinatown, also completes her school work.

This week offered a much-needed break for both of them.
