Oxford-Elgin may be heading for COVID-19 “Red Tear”

Southwestern Public Health reported 19 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the total number of active cases confirmed in the Oxford-Elgin region to 72.
An eighth death in the area, an 89-year-old Norwich township man, was also reported.
“These numbers predict the transition of Ontario’s safe and open strategy to Red Tear and will have a significant impact on local businesses,” said Southwestern Public Health Director. Dr. Joyce Rock said in a media release.
“These numbers are some of the best numbers of the year for us, but we also predict an increase in serious illness, hospitalization, ICU stay, and death.”

“But the good news is,” Locke added. “Fortunately, there is something we need to do to reduce these numbers, reduce the amount of virus circulating within the community, and reduce the risk to our beloved community.”
Health units are calling on the public to focus on three actions that reduce the most common sources of infection found in our area.
1) Keep a physical distance and wear a face cover at work. The virus spreads quickly and easily when people are nearby and remove the mask, especially in places such as breaks and lunch rooms.
2) Limit close contact with family members. Close contact is between 15 minutes and 2 meters.
3) If you experience any of the symptoms, stay home and take the test. Testing is the only way to find out if a symptom is associated with COVID-19. Once you know your results, you can take action to keep your loved ones safe.

Four of the 72 COVID-19 cases reported in the Oxford-Elgin region on Friday morning were residents of Tillsonburg.
In Oxford County, Woodstock is currently the most predominant at 19, followed by Ingersoll 10, Norwich Township 5, Tillsonburg 4, Zora 4, Blandford-Blenham 2, and Southwest Oxford 1.
Aylmer had 14 COVID-19 cases, St Thomas 12 and Southwold 1.
The COVID-19 Assessment Center is available in Woodstock, Tillsonburg, Ingersole and St. Thomas.
The Assessment Center on 17 Bear Street in Tillsonburg has tested 209 people as of this Thursday.
The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit reported 40 active COVID-19 cases on Friday, and Middlesex-London had 252 active cases, an increase of 25 from Thursday.
