Watch a rare video of a lazy baby being born and swinging the umbilical cord
The tour guide who filmed it shared images of a sloth being born and then hanging from the umbilical cord of a tree. The sloth of the newborn can be seen falling and swaying in the air before his mother attracts him and cradles him from the branch to which he is hanging.
The video, which lasts just over a minute, was shot by tour guide Steven Vela, who worked in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. according to National Geographic, he had seen the brown-throated sloth, Bradypus variegatus, from the window of his car. He stopped and started filming, not realizing what was going to happen.

"A three-toed sloth having a baby in the wild is something you don't see every day," he wrote in a Facebook article.
In a message to National Geographic, he added: "It was something incredible. I think I will die and I will never see anything like that again."
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list classifies brown-throated sloths as least concern. They are found in a large area of Central and South America, living in a variety of forest types, including tropical, cloud and lowland forests. They normally produce an infant by litter at intervals of at least 19 months.
According to research published in PLOS One in 2012, the three-fingered brown-throated sloths were surprisingly polygamous creatures. Researchers found that males excluded competitors from their range, and the sedentary lifestyle meant that females tended to stay on small patches of habitat, which means that a male could have the monopoly.
Rebecca Cliffe, executive director of the Sloth Conservation Foundation, Costa Rica, told the magazine that it is quite rare to witness the birth of a three-toed sloth as they are sedentary and pass most of their time hidden in the treetops. However, she saw a lazy birth in 2013: "It was all pretty dramatic," she said. In this case, the mother bent over and took the baby before eating the amniotic sac, the cord and the placenta.
She said National Geographic: "I don't think (hanging from the umbilical cord) happens in all cases. But I suspect that it's fairly common and doesn't really cause a problem. It makes everyone a little nervous."
Also speaking in the magazine, Sam Trull, of The Sloth Institute in Costa Rica, said he did not think hanging of the umbilical cord was normal for lazy births, however, he said that it was helpful to stay attached to the mother. "I would not be surprised if lazy people have extra-strong umbilical cords," he said.
