Don’t Schedule Surgeon’s Birthday-Consumer Health News
Thursday, December 10, 2020 (HealthDay News)-If you have the option, you may want to avoid having surgery on your surgeon’s birthday.
New studies show that older people who have had emergency surgery on the surgeon’s birthday are at a much higher risk of dying the following week.
Researchers analyzed data on approximately 981,000 emergency surgeries performed on Medicare beneficiaries by approximately 48,000 surgeons between 2011 and 2014. The analysis included 17 types of surgery.
Of these surgeries, 0.2% occurred on the surgeon’s birthday.
Mortality 30 days after surgery was 6.9% for patients who underwent surgery on the surgeon’s birthday and 5.6% for other patients, a difference of about 23%.
Surgeons can be more distracted on their birthdays than on other days, but to learn more about this issue, more research is needed, according to the authors of a study published in the journal on December 10. BMJ..
“Our study was the first to show the association between a surgeon’s birthday and patient mortality, but before concluding that birthday actually has a meaningful impact on the surgeon’s performance, further research Is necessary, “says researcher Dr. Yusuke Tsugawa. Associate Professor of Medicine in General Internal Medicine and Medical Services Research at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine in Los Angeles.
“But at this point, given the limited evidence, I don’t think patients need to avoid surgical procedures on the surgeon’s birthday,” Tsugawa said in a university news release.
The study had some limitations, the researchers said.
They could not establish a causal link between the surgeon’s birthday and patient death because they could not identify the mechanism by which the mortality rate of patients who underwent surgery on the surgeon’s birthday was high.
Also, this study is limited to older patients, and the findings may not apply to younger patients or patients undergoing elective surgery.
