View Briefing: Maine Reported Record 551 New COVID-19 Cases Wednesday
Maine broke daily records with 551 new cases of COVID-19 reported on Wednesday, just one day after front-line health workers were first vaccinated in Maine.

The daily average for Wednesday’s 7 days increased to 409.3, compared to 329.7 a week ago and 177.3 a month ago. It took only a week for the 7-day average to increase from 300 to over 400. The surge from 200 to 300, which was first seen on November 2, took about two and a half weeks. New cases were reported in all counties in Maine, led by 147 Cumberland and 146 York counties.
The Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also reported two additional deaths in Androscoggin and Oxford County. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Maine has recorded 17,311 confirmed or possible COVID-19 cases and 267 deaths. The total number of cases doubled in just over a month. The death toll this month has increased to 50.
The current number of hospitalizations is approaching 200. As of Tuesday, 195 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, 55 of whom were receiving critical care.

Health officials said Maine Medical Center nurse Keila Mitchell was probably the first person in Maine We plan to get the COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday morning, but soon thousands more will be vaccinated.
