Earthquake today: More than 30,000 aftershocks have rocked Antarctica since the end of August, according to the University of Chile, a spike in seismic activity that has sparked interest in researchers studying the remote, snow-covered continent.

Scientists from the university’s National Seismological Center said small earthquakes – including a stronger 6-magnitude tremor – were detected in the Bransfield Strait, a 60-mile (96 km) wide oceanic channel between the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. .

According to the center, several tectonic plates and fine plates converge near the strait, leading to frequent bustles, but the past three months have been unusual.

“Most of the earthquakes are concentrated at the beginning of the sequence, especially during the month of September, with more than a thousand earthquakes a day,” the center said.

The center said the vibrations have become so frequent that the strait itself, which was once increasing in width at a rate of about 7 or 8 mm (0.30 in) per year, is now expanding 15 cm (6 in) per year.

“It’s a 20-fold increase … indicating that at this moment … the Shetland Islands are separating more quickly from the Antarctic Peninsula,” said Sergio Barrientos, director of the center.

The peninsula is one of the fastest places on Earth to warm, and scientists are closely monitoring the impact of the changing climate on icebergs and glaciers.

But climate scientist Raul Cordero of the University of Santiago said it was not clear how the earthquakes might affect the ice in the region.

“There is no evidence that this kind of seismic activity … has significant impacts on the stability of the polar ice caps,” Cordero told Reuters.
